What do you want to learn?

Posted on 24. Apr, 2010 by Andrew Price in Articles

As most of my long term readers will know, my tutorial topics have been fairly wide. I’ve covered everything from modeling car wheels to creating burning buildings. I’ve had a lot of fun making them and they have helped a lot of people, but I’ll be honest with you: I created these tutorials because I wanted to.

I love cars, I love fire and I love ice fishing sheds (kidding).

But up until now I have never asked for your input. Which is stupid.

That’s like driving a bus full of people around without asking them where they want to go. I might get you there eventually, but it’s going to take a long time. So I’ve realized that unless I start asking you questions, it’s going to be a loooong trip.

Today, that’s exactly what I’m going to do.

I want you to tell me what you want to learn.

So to track your responses better, I’ve put together this simple, survey:

>>What do you want to learn?<<

A quick, painless 4 question survey.

I am currently writing my first commercial product on blender’s compositor called ‘ The Wow Factor’. So this survey will help me find out which topics you are struggling with and what tutorials I should make in the future. Your voice will be heard.

I’ll leave the comment section open for discussion, but please make sure that your tutorial requests are in the survey. Otherwise they will not be tracked.

I already asked this question on your facebook page, but realized it would be better to ask here.

I’ve made a head with hair in blender and now I want to change the hair material to something other than the skin material I have on the head. How do I do this because every time I’ve tried things like multiple materials and such either the hair and head are brown or the hair and head are skin tone. Any help would be great!
    Thanks

I’d like to learn more about modeling curved shapes, they always give me headaches! I’ve never found a good technique to work with curves, so please teach us! :)

Hi What is really annoying in books and DVDs is that you can hardly find what you want to learn. For example I bought “Bounce Tumble and Splash” with $30 just so i could learn how to do fire, I Pre-Ordered “Digital Movie-Making” just so I could know how to make a scene, and i can keep going. This is why I love this site and I wish you could scratch a little of everything. For Example:
    1) Where do you learn how to make REALISTIC SKIN ( please don’t say blender magazine – it was a few years ago and it still didn’t teach you-…)

    2) How to make a realistic OCEAN MATERIAL or scene,…

    3) How to make a large ROCKY CANION

Stuff like that. Basic hard stuff. Thanks for everything again

Hi Andrew, I know you heard it a million times, but for the weather theme it would be nice to make 1) Snow landscape 2) Wind and leaves or something 3) Rain 4) Ocean 5) and other stuff like this.
Just because its weather does not mean you cant make other stuff that have to do with weather like ocean storms, tornado and all that. I’ m not demanding it, I just thought I should let you know What I would Like.

Hey Andrew. I was thinking maybe writting an article for new blender users on lets say “The first 10 things that should be learned first” Most people that are new to 3D art rush through tons of tuturials trying to learn everything at once. But if they get the basics down first, it will make it easier for them in the long run.

hey andrew great site it’s helping a lot and i thank you for that. Maybe a few tuts on creating & setting up backgrounds for animation like in Azureus Rising – Proof of Concept maybe not as complicated just a simpler project to create the movement lighting and depth doesn’t have to be scifi or a large scene

I have a lot of architectural modelling to do and I find blender’s loft or sweep capability a pain in the neck (almost to the point of writing my own script) When I try to do a door frame or window frame etc the corners aren’t square and it takes me forever with the bezier curves. Is there a simple way to loft or sweep with meshes?

  17. Moolah

    11. Jun, 2010

    HI, nrk!
The simpliest way to make a “loft” in Blender 2.5 is Array Modifier + Curve Modifier + Subdivision surface Modifier = “Loft”. Use proper settings (clipping in Array) and a good piece of geometry to achieve the best result. Notice that you can scale any points in a curve to scale segments of a mesh.
If it’s not a dynamical model then you can apply all modifiers (before SubSurf) and add some LoopCuts to get sharp edges where you need it.

Hi Andrew. If at all possible, I would greatly like a tutorial on how to make a space ship. Currently, I am trying to model one and put a jet engine spewing flames in the back, but I’m a little stuck. Oh yea, and if you have time, you should look at the blender wikibook, “Blender 3D Noob to pro” it drastically needs updates that I can’t help out with because I’m new to blender.

Hi Andrew..Since I sent you amessage about my intrest to LEARN HOW TO MAKE A STREET SCENE..I receive no response from you.

  22. Moolah

    16. Jun, 2010

    Hello, PaModu Jack!
Sorry.. but personally to me “HOW TO MAKE A STREET SCENE” is a bit “weak” theme. Because it’s really complex.

Now I tell you HOW ;)
Get a picture (reference) of your desired street. Analyse it. Make a rough geometry, place lights. Render first time without materials (so-called clay render) to see how your scene is litten. Obtain to do it well and close to your reference.
Now make details using different textures for border stones, bricks, street lamps and etc. You can get many-many good textures (for free) on cgtextures.com.
After you’ll get a desired view and realism – add some nature to your street: even if it has no trees you can add cats, frogs, rats, dogs, crows, pigeons…
Your final render’s look will be depending on a proper camera view, angle and compositing (flares, glares and etc.), photography rules are also very important. So check these too.
Actually street scene isn’t such an easy “thing” to do in any 3d app. You must be a good modeller before you can expect some really good result from your work on such a scene.
P.S. I’m not Andrew’s spokesman and this is only my opinion to this theme.

You’re my favorite GURU. Everything you post is a great hit.

One thing I want to learn is the philosophy after scenes and the work flow for big projects?

Do you create separated blend files for each scene or one blend file with multiple scenes? How can i render simple object for testing animation and then replace them with the full mesh objects? Is it possible to just change the path from “simple objects” to “full objects”?
How do you structure your directories?

A lot of questions to get the big picture. Hope you can help me with this.

Hi Andrew, hope that you read this because it would be very nice to have a tutorial that explains how to set up the Displacement Modifier in order to create a beach scene, especially the sea, maybe even the motion of some little waves (sorry for the bad english, german guy.) only a idea for a project of mine. oh, yes by the way, great tutorials, geetings

    31. Jul, 2010

    Andrew, you rocks! :)
I’ll be glad if your next month theme will be “objects of nature”:
trees, plants, rocks, water, some animals. It will authenticly amplify your previous themes.

    31. Jul, 2010

Hi Andrew.. I support fabians request..Please a nature scene whisch features the beach and the water with ripples of waves that can be animated to rise and fall big or small. Both under water and above..wow! How can I do that?

  28. PaModu Jack

    31. Jul, 2010

Yes..Moolah…thanks for your comment and enlightenment. I understand its a task but I believe its not so difficult to make.It just requires a lot of modelling to shock out the level of realisticity of the scene.

    Hi Andrew,

I bet you’ll think this is a really stupid question, seing as you know blender so well!

    LOL!

I need to know how to join nodes together. I know you have to join them on the yellow image dots but I don’t know how???

I’ve got your book and it’s really good! Keep up the good work,

i remember your puddle tutorial, but i was wondering if you could do a tutorial on realistic splashes in water, making the splash water particles rejoin the main body of water, and how to make the water trails for things like wading through the water like a boat or a character. thanx!

    Hi Andrew,

First of all, your tutorials are awesome!!!! Keep them coming!

I’m a newbie at using Blender as well as doing 3d animation even though I have had an interest for some time. I would be interested in a tutorial or series of tutorials that explains what each and every button, tab, switch, panel, etc. does. I think that for me that knowledge would help me be somewhat more creative in figuring out how to accomplish my projects.

I’m also interested in learning how to place an animation within an animation. Is there a way to ‘append’ an animation like one appends objects or materials?

Told you that I was a newbie.
