In this tutorial you will discover how to:

  • Use indirect lighting
  • Use soft reflections to increase realism
  • Apply DOF and color grading using the compositor

Last week we completed the modelling for the hallway scene and in this final tutorial we will be applying materials, compositing and most importantly: lighting. If you’re one of the many people that struggles to get decent lighting, then this tutorial is for you :)

Hi guys, how do we render just a segment of the screen?

  • Luky

min 11.03 how to do it? thanks.

    • http://pedrozs.zzl.org Pedro

      Shift + B

      • Anonymous

Thanks, that was very helpful! Saves a lot of time to be able to test-render only a small part of the final render!

  • Benjamin

Andrew, not sure if you heard this quick tip yet. When selecting a separated group of vertices within a mesh you just need to hit the L button with the cursor hovering over a vertex. No need to select the vertex of the group. No need to hit control L.

I’ve tried to apply for the Focused Critique with this image also, but unfortunately I can’t get the form to work… So if you don’t mind, consider this my application!

    Thanks for your great work!

Okay, got the Blend texture figured out how to correct it if it is off for you.
Go to Texture > Mapping and change the X, Y, Z until if maps correctly.
Thanks to Sebastian K and dmancrosse at Blender Artists.

@Ian, I also could not get the texture to work on the lamps. Even if I used just two colors, it would show up as one. If I flipped the ramp, it would show up as the other. Aggravating not to be able to get this.
    Andy advice would be appreciated.

Never mind, I messed with the coordinate references (changed ‘Y’ to ‘Z) and it suddenly worked.

  • Jon

Good tutorial, but for the life of me I couldn’t get the color ramp on the shades to map correctly using generated coordinates, I’d end up with two lamps showing the shading and the rest not. I ended up UV unwrapping the shades and then it worked fine.

    Hi
I was wondering what add-on you used to use that showed your keystrokes on the corner of the screen. What add-on is this?

  • Thomas

    Sorry for DP!
But I forgot to mention, that you have to apply the array-modifiers of the plane before rendering.

Also I provided the link to my german version, here is the one to the english version:

    Hello Andrew,

you often complain about that it is not possible to have an array for a lamp object.
    It’s easy to do:
Just parent a lamp to a simple plane an place the lamp directly in the center of that plane. Then go to the object proberties of that plane and in the Duplication panel just hit Faces. That will replace all faces of the object with instances of the child object(s) which is here the lamp. So now the object is still a plane, which you can add to any modifier you like, but it will render as a lamp!
I made a little Youtube-Quicktip-Video on this, you will find here:

I hope that helps for further projects
