In this tutorial you will discover:

  • How to model a can
  • How to quickly add water droplets to the outside of any object
  • How to composite fire and reflections using Gimp

I was hanging out with some friends over the weekend when one of them decided to buy 2 large energy drinks. It was 8 ‘oclock at night and he drank them both. With the combined strength of roughly 5 coffees, sleeping seemed like a distant thought.

But it demonstrated a point: Energy drink companies are the kings of marketing. Sexy, flashy posters are everywhere, grabbing your attention and daring you to give in to what [you think] your body needs more of: energy.

So I decided to take the energy drink concept and see if I could replicate it in Blender.

Awesome tutorial! … this one was a lot of fun. Thanks for the lessons on the Gimp, I’ve rage quit the Gimp a couple times before, but this one was pretty easy to follow along. I’m twice the gimp user than when I started, lol. No offense, but I ended up finishing this one in the blender compositor … I wasn’t happy with the way it turned out in Gimp … it was a little bit messy toward the end where the can and the flames met.
But the image that came out of the blender compositor for this was very sharp and of course I added some motion blur to the reflection and some other compositor goodies. Have yet to add the soft orange glow around the sides of the can, but looks pretty good thus far. Thanks!

Good tutorial, but I’m having a bit of a problem. When i add the droplets with the particles it puts them on the can, but they are sideways. Any ideas of how to get them right side up. I’m using blender 2.6 so the setup under the particle system is a little different. I tried rotating the droplets, and then applying them to the can but that didn’t change anything.

    • Ach Hadda

      same :(

      • abe

I had the same problem as well.. here’s a possible solution:

        - go to second layer where the droplets are
        - select one of them
        - check the object tab
        - look for the “Relations Extras” / “Tracking Axes”
        - Change it (for me it was Axis +X and Up Axis Y)
        :)

I used cycles instead of blender internal.
I am still struggling with getting the water droplets and such to look right but when I crack that I will repost.

I changed the label just a little to make it more interesting and readable. I think this can is much nicer than the last one I did

If I wanted to animate this, does anyone have any suggestions on where to go to find a tut on the can actually “sweating”? I tried using regular particles and have them grouped with the water droplettes but it doesn’t look very realistic. Thanks for any advice on this.

this is my result using blender internal.
    Thank you very much Andrew.

How would you go about doing this in cycles? Would it be like that realistic glass of water tutorial that you did, with only a huge lamp/wall thing in the BG?

I know almost nothing about sculpting and extruding and all that, so I couldn’t really get the can shape… D:. Do you know of any tutorials for the basics of that?

    Great tutorial though. :D

I had a whole lot of fun with this tutorial. I used to play World of Warcraft and inside the game was a potion called “Noggenfogger elixir.”
For my energy drink; I made a little bit different of an energy drink:

When I wake up during the day I have two cups of coffee throughout the day and then I usually have a energy drink or two before work since I work third shift at UPS. The cost gets steep after awhile so I figured I had better look into something else. I had always heard bad things about caffeine pills and their evilness but upon a review about it I came to the conclusion that the arguments aren’t really easy to uphold. Most people will drink coffee and energy drinks but think negatively of caffeine pills for some odd reason. Caffeine should still be taken in moderation of course and it is no answer to a lack of sleep as well.

Overall the Dr Max Powers Burn Pills give me a good boost to help me get through my night at work and so far no bad side effects. I did notice I can’t sleep sometimes so my solution was just to take a pill a little earlier. I take a whole pill since I am not really to sensitive to caffeine but if you don’t know how you will react than you should probably go with a half or so. You will know pretty fast if you had to much so just don’t over do it and don’t feel you have to absolutely always have them to get through what you need. You can probably get a good habit going if you think you absolutely have to have pills to get you through everything. Make sure you sleep enough since there is no substitute for it or you might find yourself driving and feeling the need to close your eyes to rest a second and not have them reopen. If you don’t like coffee or energy drinks I would say these would be the best way to go to get a caffeine kick.

  • indigo

Same problem here, drops are good in the editor, and when I render they go all around some kind of vertex…

    • indigo

Actually just found it :) it was the normal or tangent of the particule system… the drops orientation matters :)

      Thx for your tutos Andrew.

  • Saeblundr

I successfully completed this tutorial with a can some time ago, (low res available on http://saeblundr.deviantart.com/ )

however, trying to apply the droplets to a bottle, and im having some trouble…
In this pic, you can see that the droplets appear to gravitate towards a seam… the bottle was originally mirrored, but has since been applied. i also applied the rotation & scale, just in case.

any hints would be much appreciated…

    • Joe Bloggs

Under “Rotation” in the Particles system, change the “Rotation Axis” dropdown to “Object Y”

Ok, I just found the answer for the first point :) (alt+right click , is it right?) But I still can’t solve the other two problems (actually I just solved the easier one)

  • Seba

Hi! I love your tutorials, but I got some noob problems.

    1) How do you select directly a ring of points when you just click one of them (I refer to minute 3:50, when you work on the edges)? I am forced to click 2 of them and then click on “edge loop”.

    2) when I work on object mode I can’t make a rotation on objects and I don’t know why. If I’m on edit mode there is no problem. The fact is : for lamp and camera there is no object mode, so if I want to rotate them I’ve got to work on the right panel’s object menu.

    3) I got some problems appling the texture to the can too. I made the same steps you made on your video, but the texture don’t shows in the right direction. the red part is on vertical and on the left. I solved that working on XYZ parameters, but the logo then is not in front on the camera. If I rotate the can the logo (texture) does not move.

Sorry for these basics questions but I’m a real newbie and I’ve started with your tutorials cause the others are boring. You teach some really nice things and that motivates me keep learning. (P.S. : sorry for my english too, but I’m a chilean-swiss student)

  • http://problem Raphael

Hey guys, I keep trying this tutorial step by strep. Finally got the textures to show up ok, but when I start to add with the water droplets, my textures disappear. The material seems to show ok in the materials, and textures panel, but when i render, blender only renders with no texture!, and when i try to preview my textures i don’t see them. This happens everytime i get to this step, please help. I don’t know what to do and I’m getting very frustrated. Blender seems really touchy.

  • http://problem Raphael

I followed the tutorial exactly, but for some reason my grunge dripping texture doesn’t show up. my can design raps the mesh perfectly, but no matter what i do, I cant get that humidity texture to show up over the label design. Is there any obvious reasons why this could be happening

  • Don

Hey there Andrew. Umm, how did you make the curves of the can? i mean, the topmost and lowermost body of the can..

hi andrew, great tutorial as always!

one thing regarding the gimp-scaling-can’t-see-backgrund-problem, don’t know if somebody already said it, but anyways: when scaling stuff in blender, there’s an “opacity” slider in your tool options (left side), right under the “preview: image” box.
using that, you can make your scaled part transparent to see the background through, or just set preview: outline so the scaled rect isn’t filled at all.

    kind regards
