In this tutorial you will discover:

We’ve all watched a sci-fi movie and wished we could be part of it (wall-e anyone?), and whilst creating your own scene isn’t reality it’s the next best thing.

In this tutorial you’ll learn how to create your own spaceship corridor using arrays, mirrors and whole lot of modelling.

Disclaimer: This tutorial is a biggie! Whilst the runtime is just over an hour it will probably take you 3-5 hours of actual modelling to do it yourself. So proceed at your own commitment!

    Andrew, this tutorial was fantastic! It has really built my blender confidence, and generally improved my know how. It was a bit finicky for my liking, but left me with a haunting corridor that wouldn’t look out of place in aliens. :) . Do you think you could do a tutorial on how to make super novas with smoke simulators and really clever lightning?

      I’ve got an idea in my head for how that my work! so there is a rotating sun, then it explodes into a supernova, and at first, light completely fills the screen and after a while, fades to show some floating star debris, then the whole thing fades out.

    Hello! my name is Ari, and I have a website that I just made that’s about space battles and space ships and all of the sci-fi kind of stuff.
    And I think some really cool designs of space ships and space stations would make my website look neat.
    I really love your tutorial video’s, and I’m particularly stuck on the corridor one.
    But I have absolutely NO experience with that kind of stuff, and I can’t even figure out how to download the program that your using!
    I’m working on the stuff like HTML5 for my website, but not at all artwork.

    I was kinda hoping that you could do a little bit of artwork for me, and I would put an ad for your website and stuff you do on my website!
    forgive me, I’m only 12, but I would love your help!

    When I do the loop cut it gets messed up at the end and turns into an ellipse. Why does it do this and how do i solve it?

    Just thought I would give a bit of information. Those “bolted bits” at the junctions
    of pipes are called flanges and are a connection between pipes for many reasons
    such as dissimilar materials, high pressure applications, temporary
    installations, or permanent installations where repair or replacement may need
    to be done.

    Loved the tutorial, many great modeling, lighting, and material techniques as always from the Guru. :)

    when I was modeling my control panels, I went to user preferences(Ctrl +Alt+U) and checked bolt factory and came up with new bolt meshes that I used while modeling. I was using blender 2.62.

      the 3d curser is too close. either that or you need change the digrees and the settings to your needs.

    I am having a problem when adding the floor to the corridor. When I add the plane and then join the corridor and the plane, the array goes all wonky. It seems to separate each instance of the door frame with a space teh size of the plane. Nothing I do seems to change this happening. Also, when I try to undo the joining, Blender crashes everytime. Not sure what I’ve been doing wrong. Any help?

    @disqus_uTY8ar0SYR:disqus ; I have had a similar kind of problem.
    You might be able to solve this problem by changing the ‘axis’ coordinates.
    Or, something else you can try is to select your object, go to object mode, press CTRL+A and ‘rotation & scale’. Then try the spin toll again.

    I’m sorry about wasting your time with what might be an elementary problem. But, 11 minutes into the modeling, when I use the spin tool, the face goes the opposite way and distorts, instead of making that nice 90 degree half-circle. I did select a center point with the cursor so it could rotate around it, but still. Can anybody help me? It’s driving me nuts!

    Hi, Andrew,
    A couple of comments about the corridor tutorial:
    1. I encountered the same issue as James (8-28-12 above) with the Spin tool spinning in crazy directions. Not sure why, but also don’t have any ideas how to fix it. I searched and found one other person offering suggestions for fixing, but not about what happened.
    2. In this tut, you go through quite a few adjustments without explanation. Yes, I know it is an Advanced tutorial, but it would be nice to know how to make the extrusions move along a specific axis without telling them E, Z, in order to constrain them on the Z axis (for example). You seem to have a technique that constrains them on an axis automatically.

    Been looking all over the internet for tutorials like these and have to say they’re the best I’ve found. Still needs a few in areas my classmates found though. Thanks to this tutorial I’ve finally got started on my own spacecraft’s inside areas. :)

    Wow dude, i only found out about blender a few hours ago and iv just learnt so few of the basic’s and thought id Google blender tutorials and this popped up. Unreal, that this program can produce such images like that, im still oh so lost with all the functions it has to offer, but after watching your video im definitely looking at spending alot of time to hopefully make something like this. So thanks for that !!!

    Andrew, this is a comment straight from the heart.I really like your work and in many aspects you’ve helped me and a lot of people – we are all very greatful! But please, Andrew, you have to start have some sort of manuscript. I do like the spontaneous style
    of the narration to the videos BUT 17 “AHH”/”AAHM” IN 60 SECONDS are just too many!
    That’s one ahh/ahhm every 3,5 seconds. Drives me just a little bit crazy once I get hung up on it. Step it up mr Guru-man.

    Just a thought, but you ever consider providing torrents for your videos? You know, for those with slow internet connections for which downloading the video will take days to finish. Just an here, not saying you should.

    Hey Andrew! Been following you a while and never thought I could offer something in return until at about 7 min when you start indenting the door face. Blender 2.6 release has added a new feature called “Inset Extrude” originally designed by Jon Sandstrom. Select the face or faces you wish to Inset. Ctrl F. Inset Extrude. on the left tool panel for adjustments, adjust thickness slider. Then select the new face created and use G + axis desired to slide in or out or use the axis handles. If using 2.63 after hitting ctrl F then hit F6 and the adjustments will appear in viewport so you don’t have to move mouse all the way over to tool bar =)

    You can reduce the amount of polys by deleting subdivisions in flat faces. This is possible since the BMesh update.

    Great tutorial! I also think it is a good idea to add those time-lapse parts for the repetitive parts.
    One thing you might add is, if you are in a corridor of a spaceship you might need an information panel to check i.e. computerstatus and such or a panel where you program stuff or even find shipsstatus.

    The time-lapse is great for the repetitive stuff like applying placeholder materials to all those little things, since it really is exactly the same task. The panel-making was okay to time-lapse, since you did talk us through it.
    In several of your tutorials, I keep finding that I’ve forgotten certain tricks, like the spin button. I saw you use it once, but the procedure didn’t really stick for me. Now, I might actually start using it. I didn’t expect anything that would be new to me in this tutorial, except maybe Cycles-specific things, but I had a feeling I might get reminded of several tricks I had forgotten about.
    Still hadn’t caught exactly how you snapped those vertices to a straight line, so I tried to figure it out, and finally found that it’s likely done by scaling it along one axis & pressing zero. That should simplify some things for me.

      I find that the 10x timelapse was a bi too much, it was hard to folow what was being modelled. Maybe a 5x would be better, it wouldn’t be too long but much easier to see. The part with those infinity-shaped “drawers” is kinda weird, and with the timelapse I didn’t understand i thing.

        Oh and also, in a spaceship the hex panels could be security doors, eg to prevent fire spread or even unauthorized access. (Often seen in movies, when someone is escaping and e series of door s is closing one after the other, kinda like here if these could actually close.) And the hex desing is usefull too, eg if lasers were added to the faces it would allow perfect simmetry, rather than uneven rectangles (in no-gravity you might well be sideways, walking on the walls) or squares that have only 2 faces. Also, with a little change to the desing, they could me made to fit when snapped together, and in your first image the thicker parts are much closer to each other while in the tutorial you make the waaaaaaay larger (I hope you undersand what i mean). It might be made as in your first one, the animated to extend telescopically, like in your second one, and further until they snap.
