The Perfect Holiday – Competition Results

For this competition, the theme was simple: Create your dream holiday.

A total of 87 entries were received, covering a variety of different holidays ideas and locations.

Let’s start…

All Entries

Finalists

These are the entries that although didn’t win, look great and deserve a mention:

Nicely captures the atmosphere of a late afternoon fishing trip. The character really helps to sell the scene, and the water splashes around the fish are some of the best I’ve seen. The only thing letting it down is that parts of the scene appear too dark for the sky. But other than that, it’s excellent work!

Beautiful! Now that’s my kind of holiday ;) The lighting and color grading in particular are very well done. I like the small details like the icicles, shrubbery, and snowy mountains in the distance. A solid effort indeed! Well done Deoce.

Definitely an unorthodox choice for a “perfect holiday”, but I encourage creative ideas. The characters are unique and the tornado in the background looks great. It could probably use a more effect color scheme and better lighting in places, but overall it’s a great effort ;)

The colors in this image are fantastic! You captured the feeling of a sunset at the beach perfectly. My only critique is that the ocean seems to end after about 50 metres! But other than that I really like it. Well done Zekers.

I guess fishing is quite a popular hobby for blender artists? I love the nature and lighting in the background. The biggest let down would have to be the dark rocks and logs in the foreground, as they aren’t immediately recognizable to the viewer. But great work otherwise :)

Winner

Congratulations Nita! You’ve won $500 donated to a charity of your choice + a permanent spot in the Winners Hall of Fame.

The lighting, rendering and modelling in this scene is top notch. I like how you kept the background simple so that the focus is on the girl and the horse. Beautiful composition. The love heart shaped bokeh was a really nice touch too. The scene is an excellent portrayal of everyone’s childhood: pure bliss and living in the moment.

One of my favourite scenes yet!

Honourable Mention

It’s kind of sneaky to include this image as it wasn’t actually submitted for the competition, but instead uploaded 2 weeks ago on Facebook by Pratik Solanki (winner of the first competition). However, since it suits the theme so perfectly I just had to include it! Can you guess who the characters in the scene are? ;)

A big thank you to everyone who entered this competition! The entries were all in all very impressive and I love seeing what the community is capable of.

Unfortunately I don’t have time to explain why each entry wasn’t selected as the winner, but if you list your name in the comments and ask for critiques, I’m sure the community will be more than happy to give you some pointers.

Stay tuned for the next competition to be announced next week ;)

@Yankomeister: I saw a doccie about those Crystal Caves and it would be fantastic to go there for a holiday (especially if the place was lit like that). I think they are flooded again now?

Here’s the link for my render (on blender Artist page 6 reply #114) :

I’ve never thought I could ever achieve #1. I was only asking for a minimum recognition by posting my work in the whole list of submitted renders.
In this picture, I’ve tried to depict the very moment when holidays start, when I’m about to disconnect from everyday life, far from the little demons. Yes, I’m a teacher… ^^

    • http://www.pantherdynamics.yolasite.com/ Marius

Oh, that was yours!! I thought it was really creative.

    • http://www.blenderguru.com Andrew Price

I’m so sorry bobo! I don’t know how your entry was missed. It’s being added right now.

  • Nita

  • http://www.bobo75014.legtux.org bobo

My entry was not taken into account either (even posted on Blender Artist on time, before the deadline).

I guess I just wasted loads of hours…

    • Jonathan Lampel

Well, I never saw your entry so sorry if I am wrong, but do you think you could have gotten #1 anyway? I mean that time spent isn’t wasted, its about getting experience.

On the other hand, I totally understand you, because it’s always a bummer to not do so well.

      • Jonathan Lampel

Oh sorry, I didn’t say that last part right. I meant “Its always a bummer to be left out.” It could have been taken the wrong way.

    • http://www.pantherdynamics.yolasite.com/ Marius

Could you please post the link to yours?

  • http://www.pantherdynamics.yolasite.com/ Marius

Yeah, my entry wasn’t even added to all the entries in the top…
For those curious about it anyway:

Total agreement about the winner! Fantastic work!!

    • Ian Cameron

I viewed it. Middle of the pack entry.

Glaring omission, where’s the path from the stairs to the verandah?

    • http://www.blenderguru.com Andrew Price

I’m very sorry Marius. I don’t know how it was missed. It’s being added right now.

      • http://www.pantherdynamics.yolasite.com/ Marius

No problem (^^,)! Great pick for the win; quite a way to go here, lol.

  • Jonathan Lampel

Wow, everyone did a great job! Normally I wouldn’t say anything because I don’t want to sound like I’m whining, but I would like a critique on my picture. I know that I did throw it together and was unable to spend much time on it, but I would love to hear what you have to say so I can improve future renders that I put more time into.

Thanks for having these competitions, I always make an effort to participate even if I don’t have the time, and every time I learn a lot!

  • Shef

Wow, I’m blown away by some of these. I wanted to enter but did not have the time. Too bad, I actually had a pretty good idea. I’ll make the scene in the summer probably. Can’t wait for the next one.

    I love dragoneex’s picture!

  • NathanWilkinson

    Well done Nita!

    • Nita

      thanx Nathan :)

      • http://www.shailesharts.in shailesh

        Congrats……………Welldone,,,,,,,,,,,Mast hua………

      • http://clb92.com Christoffer

Hey Nita. I was wondering if you could do a quick breakdown of the scene and your techniques, especially with the wonderful bokeh?

You definitely deserve to win. Amazing image and colours :)

  • http://blendermesh.dasya.com Jahnu Best

Let me rephrase that. It must be you and your girlfriend in the picture Pratik made. ;)

  • http://blendermesh.dasya.com Jahnu Best

The Wow Factor gave it away – it must be you and your girlfriend Pratik made? Haha! Some great entries here, honestly.

    • guest

I thought his girlfriend was a South Korean, but this girl looks European.

  • wjbarber

    Blender logo’d laptop…. wow factor books… Australian lager….. nope, no idea :D

Great entries, some really jumped out at me and overal I think the quality of entries were some of the best yet. Kicking myself for not finishing my entry, but got caught up doing spaceships, I blame the tutorial!

    • Ian Cameron

I’m an Australian, living in Sydney and no one I know drinks Fosters.

What I see people drinking most is, VB, Toohey’s, Swan, Boag’s and XXXX.

      • http://www.blenderguru.com Andrew Price

Yeap! Fosters has to be the most brilliantly marketed beer ever.
“Fosters: Australian for Beer”… and yet no Australians actually drink it ;)

        • wjbarber

Wow… my entire reality has just been been broken down. Is the sky still blue? :D

          • guest

It depends on the way you look at it. At night it is black, in the day it is sometimes grey.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/Blenderfan93/videos Steve

    Wow! some stunning entries!!

  • Roger Smith

i somehow don’t wonder why u didn’t mention Manny-eye haunted tower i felt that was done well too and derserved a mention
