New Competition: The Perfect Holiday

It’s time for another competition!

Theme: The Perfect Holiday

What’s your idea of the perfect holiday?

Is it spending time alone in the wilderness? Or perhaps taking an intergalactic space holiday?

What you create in this competition is only limited by your imagination. So be creative! And try to avoid the obvious cliché of “sitting on an island in a deckchair” ;)

The Prize

This is your chance to help the world through your art!

The winner of the last competition was Simon Meloche who opted to donate to The Greater Montreal foundation, which helps to fund education, arts and creative endeavours in the Montreal region.

Which charity will you donate to?

  • Only one entry per person
  • It must be one image
  • It must be created with Blender
  • You may use any external renderer you wish
  • Minor post processing in Gimp or Photoshop is allowed
  • Minimum image size is 1280 x 720, but the bigger the better (any aspect ratio is fine)
  • Your image must be a new creation, not an existing project
  • It must be your own work. No bought/borrowed or third party models allowed (including MakeHuman)
  • Photographic elements are allowed, but must not be a central part of the image (sky backgrounds are okay)
  • Your image must in some way relate to the theme
  • The winner will be asked to submit the .blend file for proof of its creation

Obviously what you do with the theme is up to you, but in case you’re drawing a blank here’s some “perfect holiday” inspiration:

Criteria for Judging

Entries will be judged on the following criteria:

  • Aesthetics
  • Story telling
  • Impact

If you want to win, aim for all three areas.

“The best art has meaning beyond just an image; perhaps it will bring you to tears, make you laugh, or remind you of something you’d almost forgotten. It also stands out in a crowd, and dares to be different.”Source

Tips for Winning

  • Focus on one human emotion (like awe, peace, intrigue etc.) then create an image that provokes that emotion
  • Sketch out your idea before diving into blender.
  • Create a scene that you yourself would want to be in.
  • Use reference photos whenever possible.
  • Refrain from adding text. Let the image speak for itself.

6 Reasons to Enter:

  1. Competitions push you to better your work by exploring new themes
  2. It teaches you the importance of deadlines
  3. It can help you to think creatively by working around the constraints of a set theme
  4. Competing alongside other artists is a good source of motivation
  5. Great way to showcase your artwork and get noticed
  6. You’re helping the world! The winner gets to choose which charity to donate $500 to.

Submissions and Deadline

Entries must be submitted before 11:59pm GMT on the 15th of May.

  • bobo

I can’t post on BlenderArtist either (it seems like newcomers can’t paste a link… too bad). So here it is :
I hope it’ll work… cause I’ve spent some long days on this project.

Hi, so I’ve got a question about the competition, what are the rules regarding using third party textures? No, I’m not asking if I can download someone’s texture library and use that because I’m too lazy to make my own textures, what I’m thinking of are highly specific textures that the average person doesn’t have the resources to reproduce very well. For example, a map of the earth, if the person wants a globe in their render for a history-related theme, or a country flag that has a somewhat complicated figure on it (try googling “Saint Pierre et Miquelon flag”). So, basically is it acceptable to use a third party texture if it’s under a license that allows you to use it freely, if it’s a texture you can’t recreate on your own?

Thanks in advance for any answer.

Game on! haha! good luck to us!

What a shame I can’t do this competition, ‘Holiday’ isn’t in a superheroes vocabulary.

  • Zapper3

Can i use the asteroid which i made from your tutorial and develop it into a more intriguing space scene?

  • Owldude

Wow! I just went on the perfect holiday to Italy so I think if I enter, I might try to recreate that…

  • Gary Parkin

    Good luck everyone!
I’d rather play what’s wrong? LOL
Ready? The jet is landing in the wrong direction and the cabin has no door. Bet it’s cold sleeping there. LOL

Really great renders though! I liked them. The bridge is my favorite.

    • Gary Parkin

I really like the car too.

    • Gary Parkin

BTW, that wasn’t meant at all to be rude. All of the renders are great.

  • MasterXeon1001

What if my perfect vacation was a render farm?

  • Khalid

    Very great topic.
May the best entry win and good luck to all of you.

  • The Squidifier

    Very nice idea,
Seems a bit of a stereotypical ‘blender competition’ though. Maybe some more diverse themes would be better?

  • Caroline

I’m really inspired by this because …. my perfect holiday has just begun: a week ago I started my own business. I have to work 7 days a week, 14 hours a day right now but, oh boy, I’m enjoying myself!

The above also means that I simply can’t find the time to complete an entry before the deadline, but I can’t wait to see what comes out of this.

    Good luck, everybody!

  • Max

    May 15th…

I now have something nice to do while waiting!
