About Andrew Price

User of Blender for 9+ years. I've written tutorials for 3d World Magazine and spoken at three Blender conferences. My goal is to help artists get employed in the industry by making training accessible and easy to understand. I'm an Aussie and I live in South Korea ;)
  • http://www.cgsidekick.com Joshua Alger

I am curios what you do with the .blend files after the competition? I want to enter but would like clarification as to whether the creator keeps all the rights to his/her art?

    Thanks!

btw I absolutely love your tuts. :D

    • Johnny

He is simply judging them, not taking them. I don’t claim to know Andrew, but I think he would make it clear if he was taking our copyrights.

    • http://www.blenderguru.com Andrew Price

You absolutely retain all rights to the file. The only reason I ask the winner to provide the blend file is to make sure that they used Blender.

This weeds out people who may try to enter the competition using other software :)

  • Michael

Hey Andrew is it possible that winners can exchange their prizes to the nature academy?

  • Ricardo Viana

Hey, I wanna make a render with the Jack Skellington, of The Strange World of Jack. Have problem in relation with the rule “Your image must be a new creation, not an existing project”?
Don’t is a render of him, is a render with him.
    Thank you (:

  • thomas t

wooh lovin the prizes and the theme except scotland gets far to much snow lol. indoor scene for me :D

    • Johnny

Well seeing how Andrew lives in Australia, I think it would be fine to leave out the snow.

My hardest thing is making something original, it is hard to find something that has not already been done; most indoor scenes are of a christmas tree and presents, and most outdoor scenes focus on the weather.

  • Ryan M.

Time to put Cycles to the test.

  • Bryan

    Dangit, I just bought a tablet…

  • JB3d

    @ Marius and Greg Zaal

  • http://electronicswordfish.blogspot.com/ james

is there any age limits?like im 12 years old.i’ve been doing blender for 2 years off and on.

    • Johnny

Of course not! It does not matter how old you are, but how good your art is.

Did anyone else notice that the colon after “Third Prize” is a link? :P

    • Psi-lent Rain

      Lol…great easter egg andrew!

    • Newdles

      Your Fired

    • http://www.blenderguru.com Andrew Price

Haha. I’m glad someone found it. I thought it might have gone unnoticed :P

  • Oswaldo

Opino lo mismo que José, si se pudiera algo en español seria maravilloso. seria un plus

  • Jose

I like a good Idea. Because you do not put the page in Spanish or a translator also automatic.
Use the blender internal engine 2.6 for the image.

  • Kieran

I really want to buy the Wow Factor, but I’m not sure whats going to happen when cycles releases, are you going to make a new book? Are the changes going to be huge? Or do you think I will be ok with buying it?

  • Alex Medina

Heh, what do ya know, it ends the same day I head out to see my girlfriend, definitely interested in doing this competition, can’t wait lol

  • Neil

Hey Andrew how come there is no money going to a charity?

    • http://www.blenderguru.com Andrew Price

It’s the end of the year, so I decided to give back something to the community. Next comp will be for charity again ;)

  • MelstersCreations

    This is great!!!!

  • rodcreation

    Hi,
i am trying to participate to this challenge!

  • MangaLou

    Hi, Andrew
MangaLou from Madagascar here!! You’re doing great stuff !!!
Great contest and great prizes!!! I’m going to do my best!!!
    Good luck everyone^^

  • Muaaz

It could be cycles or not?

    • http://www.blenderguru.com Andrew Price

Yes. You may use any external renderers you wish.

  • A_Nony_Mus

    Hey Andrew,
Great competition idea, awesome prizes, I am definitely going to do my best to participate. One question, though, where does all this money for prizes come from?

    • http://www.blenderguru.com Andrew Price

It’s all thanks to people who purchase The Nature Academy and The Wow Factor :)

      Glad you like the prizes.

      • A_Nony_Mus

        Oh wow, I can’t believe I forgot about that…

  • http://mitsuma.deviantart.com Florian Koch

    Is Arbaro allowed?
It would help to make Christmas trees.

    • http://www.blenderguru.com Andrew Price

In this competition, yes I will allow Arbaro.

  • Tyler

Are we allowed to use scripts to create trees, or do those have to be hand-modeled with particles for needles? I can’t think of a simple way to create a Christmas tree without a script for the branches.

    • http://www.blenderguru.com Andrew Price

Of course! Technically everything in blender is a script. So if you find a new script or add-on that creates cool results, go for it :)

This excludes MakeHuman however as its basically a pre-made model. Everything else should be fine though.

      • Xnekal

You are excluding MakeHuman, obviously, but not excluding scripts…does this include Arbaro since it sends in the preformed mesh??

        • Xnekal

          never mind….

  • Jeffrey Bright

Hey, are we allowed to post animations? I have an idea in my head for an animation. but it wouldnt look right if it was just an image O.o

    • http://www.blenderguru.com Andrew Price

Nah sorry. In order to keep it fair and accessible to everyone I am only accepting images. Try to think about how you could portray that story in just one image :)

  • Silvia

I’m going to neglet my job and house to take part in this contest!
    HO! HO! HO! :D

    • http://www.chaitanyak.com chaitanyak

      me too :)

  • Tyler

Are you talking the Santa themed Christmas or the Jesus birthday it is based on?

    • http://www.blenderguru.com Andrew Price

It’s up to you. I personally am a Christian, but I won’t force you to make your work solely around Jesus. I also won’t be biased towards those who do.

What matters is the end result and the feelings and emotions it portrays :)

      Best of luck!

      • http://fulloutstudios.weebly.com Kenny White

Awesome! I am a christian 2! I’ll see you in heaven someday mate!

        • Andre’

Imagine the rendering speed in heaven.

    • http://www.blenderguru.com Andrew Price

Either. I personally am a Christian, but I’m not going to force that on everyone :)

Just create whatever you feel most compelled to make.

But most importantly: Have Fun! :D

      • Andre’

Wish I could join the competition but my computer isn’t strong enough.:(

        • xDevilzDummyx

Just try your best ~ better than nothing XD

  • http://fulloutstudios.weebly.com Kenny White

YES! Awesome prizes! I am totally going to enter!

    • http://www.blenderguru.com Andrew Price

Awesome! Glad to have you back on the blender bandwagon :)

  • http://luksdm.blogspot.com Luks

    I’m In!.

  • Sephster

I’m not clear on the ‘no use of images’ part of the terms. Does this apply to texturing materials such as floors or walls?

    • http://www.blenderguru.com Andrew Price

No, you can use as many textures as you want. What I mean is, don’t photoshop photos of people, cars and backdrops into the scene.

It must be predominantly 3d. Textures are allowed.

Andrew, You’re being to kind. After all the competitions you’ve posted, I just never got around to starting it, but now I see that I should not strive for the prize, yet merely strive for participation.

  • Janez

Really like that there are 3 places! IMO that should be permanent change, but hope that charity style prizes will return after gift giving season…

    • Johnny

No, you do not use your [censored] to do anything when modeling.

(If you couldn’t tell, I get quite annoyed when people needlessly swear)

  • http://www.pantherdynamics.yolasite.com Marius

I’m from South Africa and would love to enter. Are there any issues related to postage or entry due to geographical location?

    • http://www.blenderguru.com Andrew Price

There shouldn’t be. But if there is I can send you the money so you can purchase it at your end.
