Live Cast Recording: General Blender Questions

There seemed to be lots of people with questions in the previous live cast session so that’s why this week I dedicated the entire 60 minute timeslot to answering questions from the community.

Users who were present during the call were able to type a questions into the chat window and I did my best to answer them ;)

Here’s the recording:

Miss out? Enter your email below and I’ll send you a reminder, one hour before the next session:

It’d be great if you did some videos for beginners with Blender 2.5. I’m trying it out, and I find it WAY better and more funtional and easier to navigate than 2.49.

@Andrew – Thanks a lot again for your time, unfortunatly I missed this Live Cast. BTW I wish you a great travel back to your city ;) (sorry for my english, I’m Québécois)

@DeDe- There is already some in the tutorials section and other good as he said on blendercookie.com.

@clecle- I know that some of his work can be found on Vimeo at http://www.vimeo.com/user628354/videos

  7. MisterX August 23, 2010 at 8:53 am #

unfortunately I missed the Live Cast too, I forgot it :(

Anyway it’s always great hearing you on the Live Cast :)
I’m curios about the ideas you mentioned, tutorials from others would be great, but as you said earlier you must check the quality, how did you called it? I think Blenderguru quality :D

The tutorials/DVDs you were talking about sound good
I’m looking forward to them :)

@clecle just click on the Portfolio button on the Top of this Page, the best work from Andrew is there ;)
And his work IS Blenderguru since he sold the Wow Factor ;) You can find out, what he did before if you click on the About button (I think this button whas it)

Keep up the great work Andrew :)

    Thanks #MixterX #Solineoz

But (#MisterX) when he was asked about how many time he spends working on Blender he said that it was when he came of his job

  9. Bardes August 23, 2010 at 12:26 pm #

  10. kiwimation August 23, 2010 at 12:48 pm #

would it be possible to convert your live casts to mp3s for download. Would be great to listen while on the way home.

    Thanks

  11. blenderman911 August 23, 2010 at 2:52 pm #

Noooooooooooo I missed it because I completely forgot :( oh well next time.

  12. Ben August 23, 2010 at 3:25 pm #

    @kiwimation

You can do this yourself actually… Since is sounds like things have been really busy for Andrew. :-)

if you use something like the Video DownloadHelper Add-on for Firefox (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3006/) you can extract the flv version of the live cast to your hard drive (I had to do this for the last livecast… ustream was not cooperating with Flash on my Linux box and would only let me watch the ad).

Then it’s just a matter of extracting the audio from the flv.

For Linux this tutorial seems to work:
    http://linux.byexamples.com/archives/229/extract-audio-from-video-or-online-stream/

For windows this looks like it might work:
    http://www.johntp.com/2007/04/12/how-to-extract-audio-from-youtube-videos/

Vixy is available as an online service or as a stand alone desktop application.

@clecle: Here is the link of Andrew’s Portfolio:
    http://www.blenderguru.com/portfolio/

You can find it on the top of this page.

@Andrew: THX again for you answers!
One of my questions are still open: How can I smothly appear an object in animations without using Alpha-Value of the material?

  14. Corey August 24, 2010 at 5:15 am #

Can’t wait for luxrender 0.8. They are going to be using OpenCL now!

  15. Connor August 24, 2010 at 7:04 am #

I have a run off of kiwimation’s, you should turn them into podcasts

  16. JA August 24, 2010 at 7:20 am #

About the viewer node in compositor.. in 2.49 you can click any node with CTRL+RMB and that connects it to the viewer. It’s very easy to compare different steps that way with the backdrop. Is this feature missing from 2.5?

  17. JoKaYo August 24, 2010 at 7:52 am #

hi I’m sorry about repeating questions

  18. Jadi August 24, 2010 at 12:38 pm #

Well done and thanks for all the blender help you give. The nasty P sound you get on a mic is called a Pollosive. Little bit of trivia for you :)

  19. Reyn August 24, 2010 at 8:09 pm #

Nicely done, Andrew. I sent you an email. :)

Another great live cast. awesome stuff Andrew!

  21. Wutzi August 25, 2010 at 12:48 am #

    Hey really cool live cast.

Really great that you actually build a popfilter it really helps ;)

    Thank you

  22. Nixon August 25, 2010 at 5:50 pm #

Thx for the livecast once again!!!
Fluid particles yay…just what i needed recently..really gotta try this out and revise some things i did with metaballs before…nice hint there.
Somebody gotta steal a real popfilter for your mic.that funny looking thing looks kinda distracting like a sock puppet or something:D

Heres my critique…i popped in on the site quite frequently last week , but still I missed the announcement of when that livecast is gonna be online…you should make like a banner that informs people when each livecast is gonna start.
Anyhow thanks for your effort.I always enjoy your tuts, episodes and casts, great stuff:)

Node Editor black backdrop wires -> Pef.–>Themes->Node Editor->Wires and Wire Select

  24. radu August 27, 2010 at 9:24 pm #

    HI Andrew
I was wondering if the blender 2.49 nodes are the same like blender 2.5
    Can you tell me ?????

  25. Someone useful August 28, 2010 at 2:05 am #

Andrew! I just found out that you can change the colour of the connectors in the compositor! Change the editor type to User preferences, click on node editor and you can change the colour of the wires.

    Hope this was useful!

  26. Don August 28, 2010 at 7:51 am #

    Andrew,
Have you considered publishing these to a podcast? I cannot seem to find the time to listen live…but the pearls of wisdom would be great to listen to when I can.
    Thanks,

  27. radu August 28, 2010 at 8:56 pm #

    HI
    i have a question:
i have a dell laptop model: latitude d620 but it dosen’t have the num pad cameras and its very annoying to click the viu and select the camera….
at blender 2.49 you have the option to emulate the numpad :
by pulling the upper line there you find :
    view & controls,edit methods,language & font,themes,auto save,system & openGL,file paths.
    click on system & openGL.
there click on emulate numpad .
now the numbers on the upper part of the laptop are just like the numpad’s
can some one tel me how to do that with blender 2.5??????

  28. Tiivik August 28, 2010 at 11:10 pm #

Very good listening! I bought Octane around a month ago and its nice to hear that you’re using at aswell. Here’s a video what i made using the demo version to show the extreme speed even on my GTX 260 and they used 2x 480′s in the Lamborghini video which is MUCH more power.

at the last question you said something about a studio and a shortfilm so why not? lets do it:
    1.everyone can post models/ideas/stuff
2.if someone has a problem, you do a tutorial on that thing, how to do it better/how to avoid a bug or something like that
    3. for the backgroundmusic somebody might know someone doing music for the fun of it (dj ravine for example xD)
    4. about 10 or 20 people that know blender verry good could check the stuff being posted and sort bad stuff out or vote for the best
    5. deadline will be 24.12.2012 so the Film can be about the end of the world didn´t happen and santa already stopped working so some kids wanna send santa a message or something like that (would be funny :)
6.untill halloween there should be a way to register for a special website or something like that to avoid too many newbies joining and slowing down the progress while weŕe trying to work. everyone who wants to join later needs to pass a test or something like that xD

tell me if you like that idea^^ i would like to join “santas army”

  30. Theo August 29, 2010 at 10:54 pm #

Hey. Would it be possible to do minutes for these? My internet can’t play this length of video :( x

  31. Shane September 1, 2010 at 11:45 pm #

Hi Andrew, Im following a few of your tutorials and have signed up as a member of Blender Guru, i make videos ( youtube.com/unone) and have started to use blender as it is a great program but 1 thing i cant do is render a image with a transparent background.. the other blender versions had more options in the render panel but 2.5 is missing this feature as far as i am aware.

I have selected RGBA colors and render RGB coors with transparent back ground but still the renders are not on a transparent background? can you help with this problem please.

Also i have done your “BREAK THE MOLD” tutorial and added on it with colors, flashing emitting lighting and smoke but in my renders the DOMAIN and PLANE outline show up in the background as a shaded object especially through the smoke can you help please?? if needed i will email screen shots for you.

Thanks again your help will be greatly appreciated.

  32. kingcreole September 2, 2010 at 1:57 am #

i´ve searched the web and didn find anything about this problem: how can i load a background movie in blender 2.53? i know you can load a movie at background images at the n-box but it didn show up in my viewport (it was an mpeg movie made with blender and i use blender 2.53)

  33. shane September 3, 2010 at 11:55 pm #

I know it’s cheating a bit but you can load a background movie on a plane as a texture… follow the steps in the bring the rain tutorial that andrew did for the sky backdrop. this should work…

  34. kingcreole September 5, 2010 at 5:23 am #

i found my mistake ^^ using an mpeg video doesn work (dont know why but an .MOV video works fine ^^

  35. Jeremy Deighan April 10, 2011 at 4:46 am #
