Live Cast Recording: How to become a better Artist

Having never done a live broadcast before, the task of starting one seemed very daunting. Hundreds of people watching me live, without any chance to backtrack or re-record the message didn’t exactly sound like a fun filled afternoon!

But I’ve always thought that the best way to get over the fear of something is to start, so on Wednesday the 11th August I started my very first Blender Guru Live Broadcast!

To my amazement, over 400 passionate blender users turned up for the event. Which made it even worse when I started tripping over my words and babbling for long periods without any sense of direction :P

If you missed the broadcast, you watch the complete unedited recording here:

I’ll just pretend that the stuttering and general non-professionalism was because of lack of sleep :P

Live Broadcasts are here to stay!

Despite all the hiccups, I actually enjoyed the first live session. There’s something about speaking with people in realtime that is so much more thrilling than writing an email or say… filling out a blog post :P That’s why I’d like to make these broadcasts a regular feature.

But, wait! I need your help.

I’d like to cater to a worldwide audience but I have no idea what time suits all of you. So to get the best information, I’d appreciate if you could list your preference in this quick survey:

>>Time Preference Survey<<

I will choose the time and day based on the most popular response from this survey, so now’s your chance to speak up!

About Andrew Price

I like long walks on the beach and yelling out during movies. My cat's name is dog, and my dog's name is cat. I am hilarious. I like Blender.

We are so many…..we should make a short movie or something like that:-) Everyone can contribute with something, would that be great?:-))))

  8. Julian August 15, 2010 at 10:07 pm #

This was very good, im happy you did this cause i missed the live show, but now can see it. Great points. And a BlenderGuru team project would be cool, and it would attract a lot of other people here also.

  9. Bryan Tenorio August 15, 2010 at 10:54 pm #

I wish I could have made it online for this. I really enjoyed watching it! I’ll be sure to tune in live next time whenever it is.

I wonder if weekends are better, because more people are off during that time, allowing people to either, stay home and watch, or stay up really late (depending where they are) I’m sure the survey will help you out with that though.

    Hi Andrew,
Im also from Germany and can sadly only watch record, because it was very late. :(
I think the Weekend would be very nice for all people out there.

    Heya Andrew:)

enjoyed that vidcast., gotta admit that I had to use the recorded version too since i’m from Europe.
One thing for you, heres a picture of a ‘Newtons Cradle’ i bet u have seen that before… http://www.mindgamesdirect.co.uk/images/newtons_cradle_large.jpg

Great work with the webiste and the tutorials, hats off and thanks for sharing all the knowledge!!!!

    Andrew,
you are the god of guruness, the doctor of 3D. Keep showering us with your benevolent Blenderness.

    Staying motivated:

I keep 3 or 4 projects going at the same time and I set aside time for each project every day. This way I don’t get bored with tedious modeling jobs. Best of all, bouncing back and forth between projects helps me keep a fresh eye on my art work. This is very important

  13. RadioactiveMonkey August 16, 2010 at 4:08 am #

I agree with the others. A team project would be awesome.

  14. Mike August 16, 2010 at 4:43 am #

Man, I wish I would have remembered to tune into this.
About the popping, can’t you just move the mic off to the side and turn the volume up?

  15. Roko August 16, 2010 at 6:05 pm #

Am I the only one with this bug?
I’m not sure how to explain it…
    In blender 2.5 alpha 3 I cant move my 3d view….
    I press alt+lmb but it stays still…
Is it bug or there’s a new hotkey?!
    Please help me!!!!
I use 32 bit version for windos XP.

  16. natholas August 16, 2010 at 6:07 pm #

Theres a submit image button on the blender.org gallery :D

  17. MisterX August 16, 2010 at 6:23 pm #

@roko I can’t understand which key you mean

you can rotate the view with your mouse and move the viewport with middlemouse button + shift

  18. Taylor H. August 16, 2010 at 9:35 pm #

Great Work. these are a great idea, because we can get a hold of you and ask questions LIVE.
Im watching this recorded and it cracks me up how whenever it pauses to load, it stops just as you blink… HAHA so funny.

    Keep it up :)

  19. Daniel August 16, 2010 at 9:45 pm #

If you were to do these live videos on Fridays you would 100% get more traffic and I would be able to watch as well!

  20. Jake August 17, 2010 at 1:30 am #

Thank god you posted the recording, I missed it when I went to my cousins house :P
When giving criticism, my teacher taught us to use a “sandwich” technique. Give them a compliment to start with, followed my constructive criticism and finally compliment them again. This way the…”victim” in some cases….won’t feel as bad about their work.

  21. Ben August 17, 2010 at 2:34 am #

    Andrew,

I haven’t finished watching the whole session yet (stumbled upon it while working on a work project late last night) but I was wondering if you saved the chat log. For those of us who don’t watch it live I think having the chat log would be really nice since it seems like a lot of interesting stuff ended up in there. And if someone (not you… sounds like you’re busy enough) had the chat log along with timing information (will have to try to attend the next session live to get an idea of how ustream works) it would be neat to combine the log with the video in a way that allows later visitors to see the video along with the chat log in sync (even when the chat window goes crazy and dumps a pile of messages on you all at the same time).

Thanks! Blenderguru is an excellent resource.

  22. Majestic-X August 17, 2010 at 3:39 am #

Awesome Vid, I also would be interested in the chat log.
Thanks for adding some awesome resources to the blender community.

I could not help but notice the huge bruise on your right arm. how did you get that?

    @Roko

    hi,
they changed the default handeling. you use the middlemousebutton to rotate and shift+mmb to move.
you can change this in the userpreferences, but i would stick to this settings, I picked them up rater fast.

    greatings from Belgium,

    Greg

Your live cast was great! Keep up the great work! You’ve really got something wonderful going here.

  28. Willem August 17, 2010 at 8:02 pm #

why don’t you organise a contest, to create the best blender model or something.
And accounts on your site would be grate to, then you don’t have to type your name and email adress every time

  29. Mike August 18, 2010 at 2:30 am #

I find the idea of a group project exciting (and admit, I have a few ideas of my own).

But since the focus of this site seems to be teaching, I couldn’t fathom how you’d balance teaching the steps with directing the project and still be able to achieve an finished result.

If someone knows how, I’d be interested in joining.

  30. Jayson August 18, 2010 at 2:50 pm #

A group project would be a great learning experience for all those tutorial watchers out there. I think that if not everyone contributing to the project was amazing at blender, its o.k. because it provides an opportunity for us to learn. I mean that is the goal of the site after all, to teach and to learn.

  31. Trond August 18, 2010 at 11:08 pm #

    Hi, Andrew!
I just started using Blender at Alpha 2.5.
Made a little video on how to use the “Beta”-stage that Blender is in, to test out the Evolution theory. Am I funny or what ;) )

  32. Kike August 18, 2010 at 11:09 pm #

Yeah, its time to start thinking of big projects broken into pieces in such a way that all of us can contribute… that (in my opinion) is the next natural step.

  33. AidyBurrows August 19, 2010 at 2:11 am #

    Hey Andrew,

Just wanted to say I thought your podcast was great. It reveals what a thoroughly nice guy you are, and at only 22 you have a great level head on your shoulders.

Keep up the good work and I wish you all the success!

Man, that audio sucks. watched the first 1 min, could not stand the boom boom coming out of my subs,so skipped the rest of it.

  39. NollieFlipX September 19, 2010 at 6:25 am #

For me to get motivated I just need to be working with other people around me. Ideas seem to flow and the fact that everyone is working focus me on the project.

  40. Patience May 3, 2011 at 11:58 pm #

I bow down humbly in the preesnce of such greatness.
