Create a High Rise Building – Part 1 of 2
Posted on 06. Jul, 2010 by Andrew Price in Architecture
Greetings Blender heads! Welcome to Week 1 of the Architecture tutorial special.
To kick things off I thought we’d jump straight in the deep end and learn how to create one of the most complex models there is, a high rise apartment block.
Because apartment blocks have multiple floors it’s easy to assume that it requires multiple amounts of work. However that really isn’t the case.
In this tutorial I will show you how to use arrays and mirrors in a way that will considerably cut down your modelling times.
In this tutorial you will learn how to:
- Use multiple arrays and mirrors effectively to cut down on your modelling time
- Create complex designs using basic shapes and loop cuts
- Follow a reference image to create a replica
This tutorial uses Blender 2.5 Alpha 2
Watch the tutorial:
>>Download the finished .blend<<
Here is a link to the reference image I used: Flickr (taken by Irene Kane).
Check back here next week for Part 2!

[...] Last week I showed you how to model a high rise building and this week we will be applying materials, lighting and compositing to produce a final image that we can send to the (imaginary) client. [...]

Sonova bleep … got all the way to applying the temp material to the main building windows, but all that happens is it turns the whole building to blue glass…I have no idea where I went wrong…?
Oh well, first shot at modeling anything of this magnitude…guess I’m starting over. Guess I’ll get faster too!
Fun project. Thanks for the tutorial!

You are a God!!!
How can you show the axis coordenates on the 3D cursor?
Thanks so much!

Awesome tutorial! Now if only my computer could handle all of those vertices once you apply the modifiers

Wonderful tutorial to understand the new Blender 2.5. But my english is not very good. I can follow most of your explanations, but I have reached a point where I cannot catch what you say. I have finish all the railings and spread them all over the building. What I do not understand is want you say to pass the railings to the central part of the building (this is about 16 minutes of the first part) so have stopped there and cannot continue. Could you send me an email explaining with plain words what you have done there?. Many thnaks

@Mike…
I ran into the same issue when it came to selecting the windows in the building to apply the temp material. The trick is that the faces that make up the windows are very hard to select with all the frames in the way – in Edit mode switch from verticies to faces so you get the selection node in the middle of the window. You will still have a zoom in and do a little trial and error in selecting them but the nodes are there, just in very close with the window frame nodes. Hope that helps.

Sorry for my english, but i’ve still a problem with this tut. I can’t succeed in copy/paste the windows from the right to the center faces….Precisely, i’can’t make the copy/paste at 15 min 57…:)
Thks for help and big thks for your works

High great tutorial! I am having trouble adding the window frames but… .this is my first go with blender2.5a2 though and when I try to add cube it appears in the outliner but can’t see it in the 3d view…

I’m making the balcony and you said ‘just turn off the array”. I can’t see how you do that?
This is a great tutorial!

ok i see in this tut you used an array modifier to spin around to make the walls why not just use the mirror modifier and just click the y and z button to mirror on all sides

Great tutorial, one thing though all scaling should be done in edit mode a least after applying the array.
If you scale in objectmode Blender really acts weird

Im just wondering if someone were to try to model something very complex like a Cathedral and be able to implement that model into a very graphic intensive game. i am with a small group called Darkwind gaming/ Photoplay productions and trying to make our first high graphics intensive game.
our website will be up soon.

I REALLY wish you would’ve showed how to do the window dividers in the balcony.. I’m having quite a tough time getting that work! :(

I just wanted to point out that you could have joined the pillars as one mesh and then gone into edit mode, selected all verts and then merge doubles. I’m sure you probably did it the way you did for the sake of the tutorial but with this method, you would have preserved the second light on the corner pillars as shown in your reference image. Just a thought.

OMG WTF!! My blender is being very STUPID! how the heck do u get that stupid railing/glass to have different colors? Whenever I do it it keeps changing ALL grey or ALL blue! I can’t get it to do separate and whenever I try selecting a new material it just changes the whole thing even when I ONLY have the glass selected it still changes the railings! WTF!?! Blender is really getting on my nerves!
glen

@Shane
if i understand your situation correctly either all of the other railings and windows are part of an array so all changes that happen to the first one happen to the array too. or if they are seperate meshes you might want to check if all of them are using the same name for the material … in that case try pressing the small button which has a number on it in the material tab therefore blender creates a seperate material.
and then you are able to change it to different material settings without affecting the others. ;)
Did it help?

HaHa you were blasting through that one Andrew, I am glad, because the faster you go, the more mistakes I make, and the more mistakes I make, the more I have to think about what I did wrong! Thank you for the great tutorial, Thank you for creating tutorials that are a bit more difficult and fast paced. Keep up the great work!

@Shane… if Blender had nerves, you would probably be on Blenders nerves LMAO!….Just joking I was pulling my hair a few times too! 2 funny LOL.
