Creating Realistic Fire in Blender 2.5

Creating Realistic Fire in Blender 2.5

Posted on 23. Feb, 2010 by Andrew Price in Simulations, Tutorials

Previously, creating fire in Blender was a chore. We were forced to use the outdated particle system combined with the clumsy halo renderer. We cringed as we hit F12 and watched the equivalent of a mustard stain materialize on screen.

Those days are over.

The new smoke simulator can not only create realistic smoke, but a gorgeous fire.

I’ve been working extensively with the smoke simulator over the past few months to find out the best method for creating fire. It’s been a long road but I believe I’ve finally got the formula right.

Last week, I launched an Introduction to Smoke Simulation that covered an in-depth approach to realistic smoke physics.

This week it’s all about fire… and it’s completely free.

What you will get from this tutorial is essentially the 3 months worth of experimenting, testing and adjusting, it took me to create the best looking fire possible.

In this tutorial you will learn:

  • How to create fire and smoke using the new smoke simulator
  • A simple lighting trick that will vastly improve the look of your fire
  • The correct material settings for fire
  • How to make your flames emit burning embers
  • An easy heat distortion trick that adds nothing to your rendertimes

Here’s a sneak peak at what’s inside:

I find it quite amusing(potentially also useful) that my campfire has an initial burst of fire.

How would I go about fixing this?

In Blender 2.5 Alpha 2 under the Smoke High Resolution menu, Wavelet is the only Noise Method I have to choose. Maybe it has been updated such that FFT in not needed?

    I’ll continue the tutorial anyway.

P.S. I’ve seen a good few of your tutorials during the past couple of days. I’d just like to say that you’ll be some one I keep an eye on from now on. Well executed and informative tutorials! Your book is calling me! =P

In the Noise Method, I don’t have FTT. How do I get it?
(I am using 2.5.2 version of Blender.)

AC, the FFT noise was removed from blender 2.5.2. it was probably decided it was not needed because if you use the smoke system with the Wavelet method there shouldnt be any noticable differences. but if you really think you need FFT maybe youll find a build on graphicall.org that still has it. no guarantees unfortunately

I don’t know if this is due to not having FFT or me just not following the toutorial well, but all of my smoke just clutters around the flow. How do I solve that?

Or it might be due to the fact that I have filled up the disk space. I will look into it.

for some reason, the smoke simulator makes blender crash if i have it on the first frame and have the visualization set to show in the 3D view. Anything that can help?

Looks great, I have been playing with blender for a while and could never get flame to look right. I have to say, you are good at what you do.
I do have one comment on something that may have been over looked. I feel like the light that the camp fire gives off should flicker.
I am not suggesting it is done poorly, it looks great. This is just one small detail I noticed.

That fire is really amazing. I can’t wait for your e-book.

I see some of you guys have been having some problems with the smoke generator as well. For me no smoke shows after the bake. Also, whenever I turn on the high res view in the 3d window the domain turns black, even if it’s before the render. If anyone has any idea what the problem could be please tell me.

When I Bake To Get Smoke It sits there for about half an hour and when it is finished there is no smoke just a couple of dots on the plane. I am using Blender 2.5 Alpha 2. Please can someone tell me how to get the smoke to apper :(

Interesante… Ojalá hagan la verssión en español.

Interesting… Hopefully they make the version in Spanish.

Thank you very much for this tutorial. I tried to follow the tutorial with the latest blender release 2.53 beta, but I couldn’t continue because my computer became to slow to work on it, the baking files were 50 gigs and the file it self was 3 gigs. My question is if this is normal and my computer might be too old? or did I do something wrong? Thanks.

Never mind my previous question. The size of the cube that I was using as domain was way bigger than the one in the sample file. As soon I reduced the size it was easier to work on it. Thanks again for this useful tutorial.

WHAAAOOWWW!! And I’m still a beginner. And I’m just 16. The only tutorial I’ve been able to follow perfectly is that puddle one.

I couldn’t get the free tutorial. I just got the refelctive glare one, but can’t get the fire tutorial.

great tutorial , I did just what you did but my flames still looks worse than yours , dont know why.

Thanks for this tutorial. I’m not finished yet, but one thing is strange. The smoke and fire are rising like a mushroom cloud as if I made an atomic bomb. Maybe some people here see the same….

I think you have the same problem. Just watch what your couple of dots are doing. I guess they behave like mine (mushroom cloud).
Is it because I didn’t use FFT?

ahhhh… everything was perfect, until I did the last part with the compositor. Now I don’t see anything if I try to render. not in layer 1 and not in layer 2 – not for “Fire” and not for “Scene”.
… I must have been stupid to think that ones first tutorial could be finished successfully.
    anyway… Any tipps or something?

    Hi
My embers go all over the place around the plane instead of going above the fire like in the tutorial.
    How can this be fixed?
    And great tutorial.
    Thanks
