I agree with much, but have serious issues with you telling people what they should and shouldn't post.

How arrogant is that?

Love your tutorials, but if someone is happy enough with what they've done, then either ignore it and move on or give them some constructive criticism - I do think that harsh (as long as it's honest) criticism is best.

I've done sketches and plans for some projects, and not for others; sometimes the idea arives and lends itself to that; other times an idea needs teasing out and I've found that actually playing around in blender has enabled it to take shape. Then again my drawing is not the best.

LMAO - It's hilarious how many people apparently take this peeve list personally, like it's aimed directly at them ;-D

My guess is that the many of the haters know that they're guilty of at least half the 'wrongs' on Andrew's list...

Art is interesting and comes in many forms. Works of art sell for millions of dollars though they look like a painter’s drop cloth, cities pay large sums for oddly shaped bits of metal, oh and there is always Picasso. But for some reason 3D artists seem to be required to conform to some standards in art. While I prefer art that conforms to the principals that Andrew espouses, and if I produce something I would like it to conform to those things as much as possible, I believe we are sometimes overly critical of people, and if someone makes something that does not infringe on anyone’s rights then our personal choice is to like it or dislike it, but just because we dislike it, doesn't mean someone else doesn't love it, and things like this do us no harm. Plagiarism and copyright violations, theft of people intellectual property, that's serious of course, and no one should do these things. Producing bad art does no one any harm. Giving someone criticism, appropriately and politely is the thing to do.

Ten reasons as to why these ten reasons really don't matter.

1. "There's no point". It's just his opinion and nothing more. Opinions are free and everybody has them. Attempting to justify yours as a standard is nonsense and pointless.

2. "You use pre-made content". So what! Another opinion that doesn't mean much. Same as number 1.

3. You’re copying something far more successful". Inspiration comes in many forms. Same as number 1 again.

4. "You didn’t plan it on paper first". Not everybody has the luxury of planning everything down to the finest detail. As a matter of fact many times last minute changes can be a good thing. Again, go to #1.

5."It’s cliche`". What is cliche? And who decides it's cliche`. Again just a matter of opinion. Everybody has one and they don't carry any weight.

6. "It’s a test render". So what! Someone is learning and is building on something they did from concept or inspiration. Nice way to try to discredit people who are showing what they can do at the moment. As long as you keep trying and improve that is the point right?

7. "It’s poorly lit". Like the reference link however artists learn from their mistakes so giving advice and references only helps not hinders. Poorly lit means there is learning to be undertaken. Criticizing someone doesn't help. Just means you enjoy discrediting people for you own personal gain. Or perhaps another reason...

8. "You don’t realise it sucks". Maybe the critic doesn't realize they suck. People come from many backgrounds, culture, beliefs and whatnot. Just because you think it sucks doesn't mean it does. Even a lot of people who say it sucks can be proven wrong. Those cave drawings in France look pretty basic and most anyone can draw them today. Does that mean they suck. Again it's just your opinion and most of the time it's not justified or right. That earless artist Vincent Van Gogh. Everybody thought his art sucked during his short lifetime. Today his art is considered some of the best ever. Just goes to show you how important opinions are.

9. "It’s boring architecture". Nothing has to be boring. Enough said.

10. "It’s overly post-processed". So someone either doesn't understand the tools they use or is attempting to fix something in post. Either way the end result could be futile or end up creating something new and artsy.
Would rather help the person then criticize them for not knowing better. At least they are aware of the problem. Perhaps giving advice or help would be better then doing what most of this blog is doing and that is being critical and ranting on about things you don't like which is rather boring in and of itself. Best advice is to keep your opinions to yourself. And all criticism is good, whether it's from Mom or John Doe. I know plenty of moms who are more critical then the John Doe's in the field. So if the aim of this blog is to get people on board with your opinion, that it's perhaps good to pick apart other peoples work or to tell people how stupid they are then there is one thing I can say about the person who started this blog.

Your very childish and need to grow up and get laid.

I think number 5 depends on the viewer and what they like to see, like for example I like romantic comedies but a lot of people don't because a lot of them are predictable I'll admit but i love watching them they can make a billion more and I'd watch every one of them because i like those kind of flicks, i don't watch movies i don't like, and the rule apples here if they didn't like those type of art they wouldn't view them, each artist is lead by his own passion, what he loves to do if that's not the case then why do it at all?

Brian He's not saying don't use caned stuff. He said "But it has absolutely no place in your portfolio". Don't download a bunch of stuff from turbosquid or highend 3d and call it your own. There is no pride in that. If you can't model it, Don't include it in your portfolio without crediting the actual artist that created it... YEA!!!!!
